Other Projects

While working with other firms Matt Sumek assisted in the following projects…

Bacara Resort & Spa
As the lead designer and assistant project manager I was responsible for initial planning and design concepts for the 250 acre coastal resort in Santa Barbara County. During the initial design we were directly involved with the developers and collaborated on all design decisions. The project consisted of numerous hotel buildings, motor court, lobby, restaurants, spa facility, main pool, tennis center, entry drive and gorgeous landscaped courtyards and grounds. In addition to planning and landscape design efforts one of my important roles was to hand select 100 mature oak trees on an adjacent property the developers owned and have them strategically located on the future resort hotel site. I was fortunate enough to have worked on such a great development; however during its final stages of completion I moved on to other opportunities. The firm did an exceptionally job of implementing its plans into a final product. The hotel is still considered one of the finest hotels in the world and was at one time California’s only 5 Star Hotel.

Ballena Vista Golf Club

Del Mar Meadows

Long Beach Town Center
I had the fortunate opportunity to work directly alongside an experienced landscape architect and designer on this high profile power center in Long Beach. This was 1997; we were on the forefront of entertainment / power centers.   We were tasked with designing exciting plazas, entries to the mall, kiosks, pedestrian walks, courtyards and so much more… The final product was a huge success. The mall is still flourishing today with business and patrons and so are the water features, concrete paving designs, plantings and other design concepts we introduced to the development.

San Elijo Hills Park
A 27 acre site displayed within the park are two baseball fields, one large multipurpose sports field, tot-lots and play areas, trails, free play areas, basketball court, picnic areas, lookout points, and outdoor plazas.

Stone Creek Ranch

Tustin Market Place
As a Landscape Architect Intern I was privileged to work with a small firm that was awarded Phase II of Tustin Market Place; an addition to phase I which was a very successful shopping and entertainment center.   Phase I was designed by world renowned architect Ricardo Legoretta and the landscape design was by an industry leader POD. We worked closely with the Irvine Company; the developer, in coming up with a concept that rivaled phase I. I was able to work on initial design concepts, illustrations, construction documents and coordination efforts with various consultants; architects, civil engineers, geo technical, structural engineers and more.. This project taught me so much and has had great influence on my career.
